So the new Creed Trailer dropped this week and I have to say, I’m impressed. The film starts Michael B. Jordan as the son of Rocky Balboa’s greatest rival in the ring, Apollo Creed. Granted, I will say that I’ve been a ‘Rocky’ fan for as long as I can remember. The franchise is just a little older than I am, but I digress. Rocky by no means is the original underdog story but it is certainly one that has resonated with me for most of my life. It’s good to see them passing the torch to Apollo Creed’s son. This is the kind of thing that Hollywood needs to start doing more in my opinion.
Going the spinoff route is a pretty bold direction and one I can definitely get behind. In an age of reboots and sequel/prequels and remakes and reimaginings and any other word they want to use to rehash old franchises and “safe” movies, this spinoff seems unique in that it can further the story of Rocky Balboa (the safe bet) as well as introduce a new character that can further the franchise. Now ultimately it will depend on box office receipts on whether the son of Apollo Creed can carry on into his own franchise, which to be fair is the basis for any franchise moving forward. The biggest positive for me is we don’t have to get into the whole recasting a minority actor in an originally white role. One is built into the series already and has the potential to be a stronger character with newer material as opposed to Michael B. Jordan just playing ‘Black Rocky’.
